PEX-A vs Copper Repipe for Friendswood Homes: Honest Comparison

If your Friendswood home is on its second or third pinhole copper leak, the question is not whether to repipe. It is whether to repipe with new copper or switch to PEX-A. Both are legitimate materials. One is significantly better in Friendswood's specific water chemistry.
Cost Comparison
For a typical 2,400 sqft Friendswood home with 3 bathrooms:
- PEX-A whole-house repipe: $5,900 to $7,600
- Copper Type L whole-house repipe: $9,500 to $12,500
- Difference: PEX-A saves $3,600 to $4,900
Hard-Water Performance (The Decisive Factor)
Our local water runs 12 to 15 grains per gallon of hardness. Mineral deposits coat the inside of copper lines, narrowing diameter and accelerating joint corrosion. PEX-A's smooth polymer interior does not accumulate mineral scale the way copper does. If you are repiping specifically because your original copper failed, re-installing copper puts you on the same clock.
Lifespan
- PEX-A: 50-year expected lifespan in Friendswood water. 25-year manufacturer warranty.
- Copper Type L: 50 to 80 year theoretical lifespan in soft water. 35 to 45 years in hard water like Friendswood.
What PEX-A Does NOT Do Well
PEX-A degrades when exposed to prolonged UV light and should not be used for outdoor exposed runs. For outdoor hose bibs we use copper or brass. For attic, slab-adjacent, or wall-cavity runs, PEX-A is the better choice.
When Copper Is Still the Right Call
- You specifically prefer the look of exposed copper in a basement or utility room
- Your HOA requires copper for exposed exterior runs
- You are in a historic home where authenticity matters
Our Default Recommendation
For 90% of Friendswood repipes, PEX-A is the honest better answer. Lower cost, longer lifespan in our water, faster install, fewer joints, modern warranty.
