Garbage Disposal Humming But Not Spinning — DIY or Call a Plumber?

A garbage disposal that hums when you flip the switch but will not spin is one of the most common kitchen complaints. 90% of the time, it is a $0 DIY fix that takes 5 minutes.
Step 1: Turn Off the Switch (Safety First)
Flip the disposal switch off. Unplug the disposal from the under-sink outlet, OR flip the breaker. Never put a hand into a powered-on disposal.
Step 2: Try the Hex Wrench Fix
Every garbage disposal has a hexagonal opening in the center of the bottom. Most disposals ship with a hex wrench stored on the disposal body or in a bag inside the sink base.
- Insert the hex wrench (usually 1/4") into the center bottom opening
- Firmly turn clockwise, then counterclockwise, back and forth
- You will feel resistance as the jam breaks free
- Remove the hex wrench
Step 3: Reset the Overload Button
On the bottom of most disposals is a small red reset button. Press it firmly back in. If it does not stay pressed, wait 10 minutes for the motor to cool.
Step 4: Clear Any Debris
With the disposal still unplugged, shine a flashlight into the opening. Look for anything that caused the jam. Remove with tongs or pliers, NEVER with your hand.
Step 5: Restore Power and Test
Plug the disposal back in. Turn on cold water full flow. Flip the switch. If it still hums, repeat the hex wrench procedure 2 to 3 more times.
When to Call a Plumber Instead
- Hex wrench will not turn in either direction — grind plate is seized
- Hum continues after jam clear + reset — motor burned out
- Water leaking from the bottom seam — body cracked, replace unit
- Burning electrical smell — electrical fault
- Disposal older than 8 years with persistent problems
